There are many species of lizards, turtles and snakes that may be kept as pets within the household however there are restrictions on some species or permit requirements so be sure to check with the local authorities first. Most reptiles are reasonably low maintenance pets and do not necessarily crave human attention like other companion animals such as cats and dogs. However it is important to note that the initial setting up of enclosures may be a costly exercise depending on the type of reptile you’re looking to keep. You should also be sure to have a rough idea of the size your pet will reach as it grows into an adult before purchasing.

Reptiles are cold blooded animals and so must be able to obtain heat from their living environment, so many of these will require a heat lamp to be placed in the enclosure you are providing for them. It also important to be aware that there are different types of heat, basking heat and ground heat so be sure to do your homework regarding which type your pet needs and ensure that your enclosure is set up correctly to accommodate these needs. It is normally best to try to place this heat source at one end of the enclosure so your pet can regulate its body temperature. You should also be aware that different species will require different temperatures for their environment so it’s important to find out the temperature relevant to your pet because you don’t want it to become too hot or too cold.

Some reptiles in particular species of lizards and snakes may need UV lighting in order to obtain vitamins like D3 which are essential for the health and well-being of your pet. Make sure to find out about any of these needs and ensure they are satisfied otherwise this can lead to debilitating health problems for your pet.

Their diets are usually wide and varied so be sure to check which types of food your pet needs to eat and also whether there are any times of the year when they will eat less/more. For example lizards may be less likely to eat as much during winter and trying to force them to eat more can harm them. It is also important to note that many reptiles need live food so be prepared to accommodate this need.
